12FOR2010: January's Goal

Proverbs 31: 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings food from afar.
Like I said in my previous post, in doing 12FOR2010, January's Goal will be based on Proverbs 31:14 (above) and is all about food. More specifically, I plan to make some changes around here that will change what we eat and the way we eat it.
While I like to cook, my meal planning has been sporadic. Since Rock was born I have tried to do the two-weeks-worth-of-menus planning thing but I've never had a really good system so it's never really worked. So I will research some good meal-planning methods.
Because of my lack of planning and because of fatigue with this pregnancy (and lately because I've had a wretched cold/bronchitis/sinus infection that just won't quit) we've developed some pretty bad eating habits. Shin (our nickname for baby #2) has been very interested in eating Taco Bell and Doritos and I've been indulging her. This has got to stop. Thus, I'll be looking at healthier meal options during this month.
I'll also be looking at how to save money while eating well. Is coupon clipping really helpful/worth my time and energy? Does it really pay to buy in bulk? Should I start making ALL of the bread we eat (right now I make some of it)? Is there a local farmers market that's open on a day besides Sunday? What should our food budget be?
Finally, organization. The space in our fridge is not being maximized. It's even worse in the pantry. We aren't eating what's in there 'cause we don't know what's in there. I'm going to clean out and organize both of these spaces.
I'm sure I'll come up with some other ways to work on this goal, but that's the vision for right now... And I'm off to take inventory of the pantry!

I accidentally found your blog several months ago and have been checking in periodically. I enjoy your blog and am inspired by your recent honesty about your resolutions. As a new stay at home mom I've decided to join you in your resolution-so keep updating and let me know what the rest of the months are going to look like! Congrats on the upcoming baby girl!

Claire -- glad you found me and please do check back whenever you want! I am also glad that you find inspiration in my goal for this year... I'll pray for you as I pray for myself! :)

Hey now...let's not mention the fridge, k? You are right, however. I don't know how many times I come across a tupperware that would be been a great lunch, but has since gone fuzzy. Somewhere I read about keeping a shelf open for leftovers only. That would be a good idea, I think.

Two things:
First, I was so excited to see that not one, but two pictures from my house were used in this post. (All credit to you as the photographer, though!)
Secondly, I also hope to focus on some of these monthly goals/foci along with you. (Is foci really a word?! It's been too long since I've been in school.)
We read Proverbs 31 in our wedding, not because it was a description of me, but of who I wanted to become. It would be great for me to take a year focusing on this passage with you.
Glad you're doing it.

And I did find a decent breadmaker recipe we thought was pretty tasty for oatmeal wheat bread -- although it may have been due to the fact that I used double the amount of honey it called for! ;)
And I still have yet to try it with olive oil and water....
My preference is still definitely for my own hand-made bread, but I just can't find the time to make it with all we have going on in this season....and I've had to settle for the breadmaker.
Love,
